Planting a Seed in a World On Fire
Sunday, June 14 ,  10 a.m.
with Rev. Rob Kinslow

Unitarian Universalists are called to dismantle systems of oppression and build a more just and equitable society. That’s a lot—and it can feel like an uphill battle when those who worship wealth and power seem to have the upper hand. How do we continue to do the work of the heart when our hearts are heavy? This Sunday we’ll remember that no matter what else is going on in the world, we can continue to plant seeds of progress. We’ll express this symbolically with our annual Flower Communion, a Unitarian Universalist tradition about the power in diversity and how everyone has a part to play in this sacred work.
What is a Flower Communion?
This annual UU tradition was created in 1923 by Dr. Norbert Capek, founder of the modern Unitarian movement in Czechoslovakia. On this Sunday, a flower is gathered from each person into a bouquet, the bouquet is blessed, and everyone is then invited to take a flower other than the one they brought.
The significance of the flower communion is that just as no two flowers are alike, so no two people are alike, yet each has a contribution to make. Our common bouquet would not be the same without the unique addition of each individual flower, just as our church community would not be the same without each and every one of us.
Please bring a flower this Sunday, either from your own garden or from the field or roadside. (We’ll have extras on hand, too.)
